A Scorpio seeks perfection and has a strong sense of own worth; a Scorpio disdains mediocrity

As anintuitive and lucid person, a Scorpio has confidence in his own judgment. A Scorpio is tenacious

Despite apparent metamorphoses, Scorpios do not change; they always resemble themselves

In Antiquity, the symbol of the eagle was always associated with Scorpio. The eagle is the king of birds, because it is capable of flying above the clouds as it seeks the Sun.

The eagle possesses keen eyesight, permitting him to see his prey.   The eagle has powerful talons.

Although the scorpion changes shells, it has survived for centuries without changing its form.

The scorpion has a poisonous stinger which inspires fear. A Scorpio does not seek to please others and may, enjoy instillin g fear.

If a scorpion is trapped by fire, the only animal which can commit suicide.

The Genitals and the Anus

Should it be surprising that the "secret" parts of the body correspond to the Scorpion (an animal whose home is the ground), which is governed by Pluto (the master of the underworld). The genitals and the anus, in this instance, are symbolic points of reference even more than anatomical features:

The genitals represent reproductive capabilities and fertilization A Scorpio is dominated by Survival instincts: he tends to seek creativity and power. The anus represents decay and elimination. A Scorpio is governed by forcesassociated with death; he tends to be destructive and aggressive.

The genitals and the anus represent two poles, or the instinctive duality of a Scorpio, who is divided between the life-instinct and the death-instinct: Eros and Thanatos. A Scorpio simultaneously seeks creation and destruction and Heaven and Hell.

This ambivalence emerges: within the season: decomposition of the natural world in November is the source of the next cycle; within the liturgical calendar: All Saints' Day (glorification of spiritual life) is followed by the Day of the Dead;

within the symbol itself: a scorpion buried in the ground (the secret life of sub-conscious instincts) and the eagle which ascends into the sky (nobility and an ability to exalt, associated with the transforming capabilities of this sign).

These sources provide the zodiacal formula for Scorpio: an autumnal, fixed, aquatic, Plutonic, and Martian temperament, associated with the genitals and the anus. The for-mula can be expressed in the following manner:

Ambivalence

The complex character of a Scorpio is derived from coexistence of intense creative and destructive instincts. The dialectic of these two poles produces torment, but also exceptional energy for living.

A Scorpio's physique often reflects ambivalence: although Scorpios do not usually appear to be robust, they possess great strength. Traditionally, the distinctive features of Scorpio's embody an association with the eagle: an aquiline nose, an intent and penetrating gaze (which is observable among such Scorpios as Bernadotte, Paganini, Trotsky, Louis Jouvet, Clouzot, and Picasso). Strong physical magnetism is conveyed by this intent gaze, evoking the instinctive strengths associated with the sign.

Rooted in his own temperament, a Scorpio is fiercely individualistic: aggressiveness often produces conflict with the environment. A Scorpio stabilizes himself through contrasts and seeks expression through conflict, using it as a crucible or counterweight. Thus, Martin Luther, a Scorpio, resisted excommunication and began the Reformation by establishing the Lutheran Church. Another Scorpio, Blanqui, opposed capitalism and persevered in organizing the socialist movement, in spite of imprisonment.

DeGaulle, who was a Scorpio, renounced the armistice, refused to surrender, and estab-lished the Resistance, leading it in an underground struggle.

A Penetrating Mind

Along with ambivalence, Scorpios are characterized by sharp intuition, keen minds, and lucidity. With a strong sense of cause and effect, they enjoy untangling mysteries, as in the case of Mata Hari. Attracted by inner depths, a Scorpio readily pursues the other side of reality: the hid-den, the invisible, the occult, the mystical (Edgar Allan Poe, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Villiers de l'Isle Adam).

Capable of grasping multiple aspects of an issue, Scorpios possess a talent for observa-tion: thus, Xavier Bichat defined the fundamental differences between animal and plant life. An aggressive spirit often inspires critical faculties and intellectual rebellion (Camus' The Rebel, or Malraux's The Victors). The piercing eyes of the eagle strongly reflect a Scor-pio's mode of thought.

Despite a peaceful appearance, a Scorpio is capable of great aggressiveness. A Scorpio is not afraid to attack.

Death is not alien to Scorpios; it is a natural companion for them.

The Middle of Autumn

The  every-day concerns of the real world are overshadowed by the nocturnal impulses of the unconscious.

A Scorpio is a reserved and silent does not seem to be affected by the vicissitudes of life and remains calm and silent, appearing to be indifferent.

A Scorpio is not for external qualities. He seeks the principle and the essence of everything. A Scorpio is oriented toward destruction of that which exists. A Scorpio is toward rebirth, restores, fertilizes, and facilitates.

Scorpio is headstrong and decisive, with a good memory. Scorpio is a fixed sign

Deep Waters

This seemingly tranquil water con-ceals an inner turbulence; sometimes it bursts forth like lava from the core of the earth. The emotions are rapidly absorbed within fixed water (water which "acts"), and then they ferment slowly. The attributes of Scorpio produce a morose and somewhat phlegmatic person

Scorpios draw their energy from internal compulsions, seeking to give them a concrete mode of expression.

Mars and Pluto

Scorpio is governed by Pluto, and Mars is another planet which rules this sign. Pluto, also known as the prince of darkness,, governs the kingdom of the dead. To travel there, it is necessary to cross the Styx (abomination), the border of the nether world. Its tributaries are Lethe (forgetfulness), Acheron (misfortune), Cocytus (piercing sounds), and Phlegethon (a river of flame)

November:

The Sun is losing strength rapidly, and the nights become longer than days Scorpios are introverted.

Silence and coldness pervade Nature, which appears motionless. The ice on ponds becomes firm.

Dead leaves fall from trees and plants, and the bare trunks are visible.

Leaves fall apart on the ground, and an odor of decomposition fills the air.

At the same time, decaying leaves produce humus, while decaying fruits and hulls provide seeds for the next cycle.

A Midway between the end of summer and the beginning of Winter when Scorpio reigns, Autumn is at its peak..

Among the triplicity of water signs, the fixed water of Scorpio is situated between the cardinal water of Cancer (the original water, the source, expression of feelings) and the mutable water of Pisces (water in iti final form, the ocean, spirituality). Externally, the water seems to be the stagnant and murky water of a swamp.

AScorpio has a calm and impenetrable expression, as well as a voice which seems to come from deep inside.

A Scorpio has a tendency to see only the hidden side of life. He (she) can easily see through the outer shells of others in order to identify their unexpressed instincts. A Scorpio displays a spellbinding magnet-ism which may attract and repel at the same time. This is a person who possesses a puzzling charm.

Souls which are crossing the Styxmust pay the miserly boatman Charon in order not to wait eternally beside the river forever. A Scorpio knows the "cost of living" and has strong financial talents.

Not far from Tartarus, there is another river, the river of memory. A Scorpio possesses a good memory. When he ascends to our world, Pluto wears a helmet which renders him invisible. A Scorpio does not reveal his intentions. He is a clever tactician.

Pluto judges the dead, sending souls to the pitch-black depths of Tartarus (Hell) or to the Elysian Fields (the realm of eternal happiness). Two contradictory forces, death and rebirth, are present. A Scorpio is a per-son characterized by metamorphoses: the depths of depression can readily be followed by a renewed zest for life.Because Pluto is aware of the invis-ible, he(she) judges the dead according to their motivations instead of their actions. A Scorpio possesses great perspicacity and keen intuitions.

Pluto rarely lets his prey escape: Persephone whom he kidnapped had to spend three months a year in the nether world despite the pleas of Demeter, her mother. A Scorpio is stubborn and persists to 'the end. He does not give way or change courses. A Scorpio is stubborn and persists to 'the end. He does not give way or change courses.

Pluto was fearless. During the battle with his father, Saturn, he was the first to disarm his elder. A Scorpio is brave and combative. A noted lover, Pluto lustfully pursued the nymphs on Earth (Leucea and Menthea). A Scorpio possesses powerful sexual instincts and is attracted by innocence.

Mars is the god of war, and his emblems are the lance and the sword. A Scorpio thrives on strife and does not fear risks. Mars never favors one city or one party over another: he initiates the battle. Scorpions are individualistic, and they do not like to follow norms. They also have a tendency to incite discord.

Mars never takes the trouble of going to Olympus to justify his actions. Seldom affected by others' opinions, Scorpio sets his own rules

Love as a Battle

Influenced by the two poles, Life and Death - Eros and Thanatos (Mata Hari) - a Scorpio's love is a passionate and intense form of love, often expressed as conflictive love, where bonds between two lovers are strengthened by the pain which they endure.

Rooted in sexuality, men and women born under this sign readily display their masculinity or feminity. In an extreme form, the Scorpio woman becomes afethinefatale, represented by the image of Carmen ("If I love you, watch out!") or by the myth of the vamp in films.

The Scorpio ideogram consists of a character whose first stroke,is comparable to the scorpion's claws, whereas the final stroke suggests its tail. A scorpion clings with its claws and defends itself by means of its tail which can kill other creatures or even the scorpion itself. The ' ideogram is also the letter "M," with the last leg becoming -an arrow, representing 'the stinger. The letter "M" represents water, the source of fertilization, and, in this in-stance, the arrow penetrates the depths. The Scorpio symbol may also express the mystery of redemption through the fecundity of water: death by means of the stinger represents renewal of life through water, resulting in rebirth.
