Image Virgo 3 x 3

The symbol represents a young woman. She has wings (symbol of spirituality).

She is holding a sheaf of wheat or a cluster of flowers.

The origin of wheat is not known: according to tradition, it sprang from the marriage of Heaven and Earth.

Wheat is subject to an unending cycle: the seed, fruit, and then the harvested kernels. Thereafter, it returns to the earth to grow again.

The hand holding the wheat is the hand of a virgin.

Only One who Masters himself can gain freedom from the forces which govern all living things"

August., The End of Summer

The Earth has been heated by the Sun, and dryness pervades Nature. Like Nature itself, human beings are tired, They are overcome with too much heat and too much life.

The heat of Summer diminishes. The days imperceptibly shorten. The stalks have stopped growing, and the ripe wheat is ready to be harvested. Natural forces grow weaker

Crops are being harvested, and the granaries are being filled.

When the grain has been harvested, the Earth appears to be desolate.

A Virgo seeks purity with a certain naivet6.

A Virgo is a highly energetic person, especially in terms of mental activity.

This is a person who tends to make use of all talents.

Efforts are made to reconcile intuition with logic.

A Virgo is aware of relationships between Man and Nature, cycles of death and rebirth, and the vicissitudes of life: a mature world-view predominates.

A Virgo is engaged in a quest for perfection.

Mutable Summer

7 Summer is ending, and this is a period of transition.

Virgo is a mutable sign.

Virgo: An Eailh Sign

7 During this period of dryness, detachment from feelings is sought, and there is a desire to return to essential attributes.  A Virgo relies upon the intellect, seeking a logical understanding of the world.

IT There is a sense of energy being lost, as well as the need for a secure framework.  A Vi rgo seeks to evolve amidst standards, rules, prescriptions, and customs.

7 The Virgo is prudent, methodical, and meticulous.  This is a person with a high level of practical sense and a keen awareness of realities.

7 A Virgo is inclined toward anxiety and does not know how to emphasize the favorable.

7 Characterized by considerable mental activity, a Virgo seeks to reconcile ethical values with the realities of life.

Earth, the element representing density, stability, and solidity, is associated with Virgo. It is specifically expressed by the zodiacal position of Virgo.  Among the triplicity of earth signs, the mutable earth of Virgo, where the individual attempts to set aside feelings in order to act, follows the cardinal earth of Capricorn (sowing of crops, the conscience) and the fixed earth of Taurus (the flowering and fertile earth: a sense of realities and effectiveness).

Attributes include activity and impatience, without displaying of emotions.  A Virgo has a lively and intelligent expression, a penetrating gaze, and a steady and premeditated

way of speaking.

7 The earth has been planted, tilled, and cultivated; harvesting has just been completed.

7 A Virgo is aware of efforts and of all levels of suffering.  A Virgo sympathizes with those who must perform difficult tasks.

tV Freshly mown wheat is scattered upon the earth.

7 The earth has been "drained." All of its resources have been depleted. The earth becomes dry and barren.

17 After the harvest, the earth possesses a new form.  It is in a virgin and pure state, ready for planting of new crops.

Mercury

7 A Virgo is motivated to fulfill obligations. This is a person with a strong sense of responsibility to others and to himself.

tV A Virgo lacks spontaneity and is subdued and modest.  There is a fear of sensitivity, and emotions are concealed.

ir A Virgo verifies everything before proceeding.  A Virgo analyzes and studies the facts before beginning projects.

Mercury's role as an interpreter is shared by Gemini and Virgo.

Gemini is primarily associated with Mercury in his youth, as the messenger of t he gods, symbolizing intelligence and communication.  Virgo is associated with Mercury as an adult. when he has the caduceus, a symbol of profound intelligence.

Moreover, in many instances, Virgo has been traditionally linked to Demeter.

t7 Because of his agility and vivacity, Mercury won the admiration of Jupiter who gave him the role of a divine messenger.

tV In his new role, Mercury was responsible for facilitating contracts, promoting trade, and protecting roads. He became the patron of merchants, jurists, intellec. tuals, and thieves.

17 Mercury taught the gods how to make fire.

7 Mercury helped the Three Fates to invent the alphabet, and he was the inventor of astronomy, which is associated with mathematics.

TV Mercury also invented written transcription of music according to staffs.

17 Mercury developed a system of weights and measures.

7 He introduced cultivation of olive-trees.

tT He invented gymnastics.

rY Pluto chose Mercury to guide dead souls to him. Thus, Mercury became an intermediary between sleep and wakefulness.

7 For this role, Mercury's emblem is the caduceus: a staff with two serpents coiled around it in opposite directions.  The serpents embody a symbolic duality: one is benevolent, and the other is evil.

7 The serpents are coiled in a loop where one ascends and the other descends.  This loop represents evolution.

17 A Virgo has an excessive need for action (like Gemini, but within a different context), as well as for acquiring knowledge.

7 A Virgo is an excellent intermediary, with a certain knack for managing people and situations in order to serve both personal interests and those of others.

7 A Virgo is capable of controlling and directing internal energy.

7 A Virgo can contribute to qualitative knowledge in two ways: through pure knowledge (the alphabet) and through practical knowledge (mathematics).  There is a strong motivation to gain greater knowledge and to apply existing knowledge.

7 A Virgo is skilled in conveying im-pressions, in rendering the irrational ra-tional and in rendering the indefiniteconcrete: sounds are converted to music

  • and images to poetry.  In combining intuitions and the intellect, this is a realistic and concrete personality type.
  • iT A Virgo has a strong sense of proportions.

7 As well as a sense of organization and methods.

17 A Virgo is interested in body harmony and bodily functions. This is the sign of nutritionists and physicians.

7 A Virgo awakens the conscience.

7 A Virgo is simultaneously attracted by the forces of darkness and light. Thus, there is a quest for an equilibrium between good and evil. This aspiration explains the perpetual conflict within a Virgo.

7 Two types of characteristics coexist: inhibition and compulsiveness, tradition and responsiveness.  A Virgo is an ambivalent person who changes from one state to another: from evil to good, from benevolence to hatred.  These changes bring awareness which permits growth

17 The staff of the caduceus represents the axis of the Earth. It reconciles opposite tendencies and symbolizes Peace.

tT A Virgo seeks peace and serenity.

Along with Mercury who governs Virgo, this sign is also protected by Demeter, the mothergoddess who, as previously indicated, belongs to the symbolic context of Taurus. Nevertheless, a symbol may possess multiple aspects according to the mode of observation or the level of development. In relation to the sixth sign, for example, the myth of Demeter

    offers new levels of comprehension.

17 Devastated by the loss of her daughter Persephone, who was kidnapped by Pluto, Demeter searched for nine days and nine nights without resting.  The number nine, which frequently appears in mythology, represents perfection.  It is a symbol of fulfillment.

17 Demeter travelled throughout the known world without finding her daughter.

17 Moved by Demeter's desperation, Zeus sent Mercury into the underworld to take Persephone back to her mother. After their reunion, Demeter became the patron of the Eleusian mysteries.

17 Their function is to sort out nutrients and choose those that are necessary.

t7 The intestines eliminate waste and assimilate food.

7 A Virgo seeks fruition, with an impression that there is always something lacking in terms of attaining complete fulfillment. Nevertheless, Demeter's lost daughter truly represents a portion of herself which discovers the profound mysteries of Pluto. A Virgo is drawn by the mysteries of life and death, at the spiritual and physical levels, and there is a strong desire to establish harmony.

7 A Virgo hopes to find the essence of life and even spiritual values through classification and analysis of physical reality.

rY A Virgo may ultimately learn that the two worlds which are to be reconciled are only separated by appearance.  To attain the hidden world, or the world of the subconscious or spirituality, it is necessary to "know" how to experience the world of apparent realities to the fullest - in other words, it must be fully accepted - this is the ethic which may guide a Virgo.

These sources provide the zodiacal formula for Virgo: an aestival, mutable,,terrestrial, and Mercurial temperament, associated with the intestines. The formula can be presented in the following manner:
