Cardinal Summer: Spring has ended, and Summer is beginning This is the sign of fascination with the imaginary. Cancer is a cardinal sign.

A Fountain of Emotions:

Cancer is the first water sign within the Zodiac.  It represents cardinal water: the source, or emotivity.  Then there is the fixed water of Scorpio (the marshes of the unconscious) and the mutable water of Pisces (the ocean of spirituality).Within the cardinal water of Cancer, emotions appear "from the first gush," and they flow intensely through the personality. The first impressions of a Cancer are often accurate.  He is a hypersensitive person, with a tranquil countenance, although a lingering fearfulness may also be present. In terms of his attributes, he is a phlegmatic and highly emotional type. The water of Cancer is expressed in the following forms:

A bubbling spring, breaking through  the ground A Cancer's emotions often go back to childhood. Their origins are remote and subconscious. A spring which does not dry up. A Cancer is closely attuned to his subconscious, which abounds with images. He is often a highly creative person. Water from the spring flows rapidly from one stone to another, mingling with other elements. A Cancer's emotions change in contact with other persons, and they varyaccording to the landscape.  He is an imaginative wanderer and may be unstable.

The Moon is his Planet

Cancer is ruled by the Moon - the Moon which reflects the rays of the Sun, or the pole of conceptual and rational knowledge.  The Moon is a source of intuitions.

The attributes of a Cancer are so closely associated with those of the Moon that we often speak of "lunar types," or whimsicality, when we attempt to understand persons born under this sign.

Greek mythology, the Moon was represented by three deities corresponding to its different phases.  The tendencies of Cancer can be more fully recognized by considering these three deities.

The New Moon symbol: the lunar crescent facing either the heavens or the Earth was represented by Artemis, or Diana, the goddess of the hunt, who ran through the mountains and forests ceaselessly: she was the savage goddess of Nature.

There are two types of Cancers: the "crescent pointing toward the heavens" type, who escapes from his inner world by pursuing images nomadically, or the "crescent pointing toward the Earth" type, who dominates his inner world, pursuing images in a sedentary fashion.

One day, she said to Jupiter, "Oh, my father!  Allow your daughter to remain a virgin forever!"

A Cancer seeks purity. He cannot comprehend evil. From then on, Artemis was armed with arrows and a bow: "The queen of the forest, the impetuous huntress, had no pleasures other than pursuing and hunting her prey." (Mario Meunier)

How would it be possible to understand the passive outward appearance of a Cancer without knowing that most of his energy is inwardly directed?

Her bow is a symbol of virtue.Guided by a virtuous soul,

a Cancer zealously pursues chimeras, beasts, or dark ideas within the subconscious.  Could this be the source of his sufferings?

Artemis was merciless in punishing adulterous women.

A Cancer remains extremely devoted to the family and to traditions and customs.  He cannot bear being deceived.

Yet she protected pregnant women and was the goddess of Childbirth, to whom sacrifices and wild animals were offered.

A Cancer is capable of making sacrifices for children. This is the most maternal sign.

The Full Moon phase is symbolized by Selene-Helen. Helen's radiant beauty brought chaos to Europa because of her many admirers.  Paris kidnapped Helen.

A Cancer conveys a somewhat disquieting impression of "constant evolution," although he is unaware of it.  He seems as difficult to grasp as a reflection. and he invites others to take possession of him.

Hecate, the goddess of the Dead, who governs Hades and guides the souls of the dead, was associated with a sombre Moon on the darkest nights. Her symbols are daggers, serpents, and the keys to Hades.

When a Cancer has betrayed his ideals, he is consumed with remorse, but these phases do not continue, for they are the prelude to regeneration.  Like the Moon, the phases of a Cancer's personality are governed by a cycle of death and rebirth.

In her journey through the shadows, Hecate appeared with a torch which gave off a hazy and ghostly light. Her name was invoked in sorcerers' rituals.

A Cancer is bound to the world by irrational ties. He sees himself as a bearer of "indirect knowledge" (the Moon reflects the light of the Sun) which cannot be explained by logic.  He is an intuitive person.
